South Grand Ted Drewes

A hand holds a yellow cup of Ted Drewes Frozen Custard with a white spoon inserted. The cup has the company's logo: a white outline of a house shape with zigzags on top, the text "TED DREWES. FROZEN CUSTARD," and the addresses "6726 CHIPPEWA - 4224 S. GRAND," and the phrase "ST. LOUIS' FINEST". In the blurred background, the Ted Drewes store itself is visible, along with a red car and a blue sky with fluffy clouds.

It's "other Ted Drewes" season! I have now lived in the general area of the South Grand Ted Drewes for more than 20 years, and a stopping here is a summer tradition. This week we had our first trip of the season in our ~*~new minivan~*~ and got to sit in the back. I still go for a Big Apple concrete and Francis is a cookies & cream (Oreo) person no matter where we are. Our very vanilla child has decided there's nothing better than a one-scoop cone.

A daytime view of the Ted Drewes Frozen Custard stand. The white brick building with a white awning and red lettering spelling "TED DREWES" is set against a sky with scattered white clouds. A customer wearing a white tshirt and beige pants stands at one of the order windows. Other cars are parked in the customer parking lot. Historic Route 66 signage is visible on the windows.

The only other, and more famous, Ted Drewes is the big one on Chippewa (Route 66), and they see most of the tourists. We still see folks from all over the place who stumble on this one. I remember one year talking to a Baptist high school youth group who was in town for  a service project. This most recent trip there was a family speaking a languange I didn't recognize (maybe Greek) and I remarked to Francis that they ordered milk shakes, which never even occurred to me. I imagine "concrete" (frozen custard thick enough to turn upside down) doesn't translate.

Thank you, Ted Drewes, for continuing to open the small store every summer! The neighborhood wouldn't be the same without you!
