Fish Fry Season!

Today I was looking for a fish fry in the area of a trivia night we are doing on Friday night (that may be the most "St Louis" sentence I've ever typed) and I had to mentally map out parishes between my house and the trivia night, and then look them up. There is no central fish fry website, as far as I can find, and my Google-fu is strong.

St Louis has such a large Catholic population that people of all faiths (or no faith) look forward to fish fry season, but not all of you will have the parish map in your head like a Catholic-raised South St Louisan. You think the high school question is bad? Catholics ask what parish you live in.

So tonight I fill this void for you! I give you all the online menus I could find! So that I get to bed before midnight tonight, I am limiting my search to the area codes 314 and 636. If you have more to add to the list (618 represent!) please leave them in the comments and I will add them to the list. YOU MUST HAVE AN ONLINE MENU. You are free to leave details of a fish fry in the comments, but it's not going on the big list without an online menu.

  1. I know exactly what you mean about the websites.

St. Ferdinand in Florissant has a menu on their page and I can confirm the prices are up-to-date. http://www.stferdinandstl.org/parish/organizations/administration/fish-fry

  2. Wow that is awesome how you compiled 'em all together...someone really needs to make a proper website that includes all possible menus, links to websites (where applicable), and other information about all possible Fish Frys. We are going to Immacolata on Clayton tonight and to Holy Redeemer in Webster Groves on Friday.

I have tried, for the past coupla years, to talk our Fish Fry maven-in-chief (generally I act as her second-in-command) into an east-side Fish Fry!

    1. omg when did Blogger add this new feature where you can reply to a comment? awesome! Yeah, I am definitely going to consider a real website with a map in the future if this gets a lot of traffic in the fish fry season. I could not BELIEVE how hard it was to find this stuff. I must have read 200 church bulletins last night to come up with 16 online menus (so far).

    1. I've not heard of St Celeste, although St Cecilia's Mexican fish fry is very popular. I also found out St Agatha's Polish Roman Catholic Church has a fish fry, but no menu online.

    2. St. Cecilia's Fish Fry is popular, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out why. We waited 2 hour in line before getting our food, which was soggy fish and Mexican sides. The sides were OK, but really not worth the wait we had to endure. Especially with the fish being under par.

    3. somebody had to say it. I lived in the neighborhood of St Cecilia's for years and never bothered. I love a fish fry, but not 2 hour wait kind of love.

  11. The "No Meat For You! - A St. Louis Fish Fry Blog" has reviews of local fish fries: http://nomeatforyou.blogspot.com/ They also have a Facebook page.

KSDK has a list too: http://www.ksdk.com/life/community/events/fish_fry/

If anyone can provide a link to St. Celeste's Mexican fish fry, that would be great. I couldn't find them online. I found a St. Celestine's in Illinois, but wasn't sure if it was the correct parish.

    1. I'm pretty sure they meant St Cecilia - people have a hard time with that name. I've also seen it referred to as "St Felecias". Also mentioned below is Our Lady of Guadalupe in Ferguson, which also does "Mexican" fish fry & has a salsa bar.

  12. Hah, we have developed a list of favorites and a list of never-agains. Saint Agatha's quickly made it onto the former list after last year (they even have a few selections of Polish beer available), and Saint Ferdinand's is chief among the latter (long lines, confusing by-weight pricing, "cajun" fish that's nothing more than fish with black pepper on it, condiments that aren't free, rude workers that wanted to call the police just because I was taking pictures - have they got something to hide? I figured a year-round fry would have smoothed some of these things out). We went to Saint Cecilia's the first year they did a fry (and the kitchen almost burnt down) and liked it enough to try it again the following year (typically we do half and half previously-visited and new frys), at which time it SUCKED for the exact reasons mentioned above (the line was hours long and not even remotely worth the wait)! Our Lady of Guadalupe in Ferguson has a decent Mexi-fry with a salsa bar and everything. It's one of the cheapest frys, period, too (especially if you stick to the fish tacos) and occasionally features some Mexican dancing lessons.

    1. Our Lady of Guadalupe is Francis's mom's parish. I'm hoping to check that one out this season. Good to know about St Agatha, too! I never even knew there was ANOTHER Polish church until I started this list (saw their fish fry mention on their website, but no menu to speak of).

I STILL need to figure out which fry to hit tomorrow night for trivia grub. I think I'll probably go to St Stephen since they have the mac & cheese bites.
